An innovative fitness app aims to make 30 minutes of exercise feel like five, in a bid to encourage people to train for longer.

Goji Play, by Guitar Hero co-founders Blue Goji, integrates mobile technology with movement incentives.

It's a mobile gaming system that links with iOS devices and attaches to common cardio equipment, allowing users to play fast-paced games on their iPad or iPhone.

“We’ve witnessed how the fun of games can inspire the masses to be more active and social,” said Kai Huang, Blue Goji co-founder and CEO.

“Goji Play is the culmination of our dream to encourage people to get fit by fusing games and cardio equipment.

"Our goal is to help people lead healthier and more active lives by providing anyone across all fitness levels with a fun way to work out, one that is accessible and compelling to use.”

Two game controllers attach to the handlebars of cardio equipment, and a small motion tracker clips to the gamer’s belt.

The wearable hardware communicates with the gaming app via Bluetooth. The faster a person moves, the faster the game moves.

Goji Play users can set fitness goals and monitor their progress including distance, elapsed time and calories burned. The app keeps track of their fitness progress.

According to research by Digital Australia, 93 per cent of Australian households have a gaming device and 21 per cent of Australian adults report sedentary levels of physical activity.

There are 18 games available on the free app. Extra games are being added regularly.

According to Blue Goji, the most popular Goji Play games are Fisticufs, a boxing game, and Smash the Blocks, a 3-D running game.

The game controllers and motion tracker are available at JB-hi-fi for $129. Software can be downloaded free from Apple's iTunes App Store.

Goji Play is expected to be available on Android by early 2015.
