Fine facial lines are a normal sign of ageing but sometimes the stresses of daily life can cause our face to age faster than we like.

Thankfully, there are ways to diminish their appearance — both at home and at the spa.

AT-HOME DEFENCE

Dehydration, stress, free-radical damage and having a nutrient- deficient diet all play a role in causing premature ageing, according to The Cove Spa’s Jocelyn Derecourt.

She says the easiest way to diminish fine lines is to keep hydrated and to wear a sunscreen.

“Fine lines caused by dehydration will improve by increasing your water intake, reducing caffeine, cigarettes and alcohol and increasing essential fatty acids such as fish oil, organic flaxseed oil, chia seeds, fish, nuts and avocados — they all do wonders for the skin, ” she says. “Sun exposure also breaks down collagen and elastin in the skin, which leads to premature ageing, so it is important to wear sunscreen every day.”

Ms Derecourt says too much stress will also cause premature fine lines.

“Some good relaxation techniques are yoga, meditation, simple breathing exercises, stretching, getting a good night’s sleep and massage, ” she says.

Bodhi J Health + Beauty Spa’s Tegan Hall says to view fine lines from a preventive perspective and use anti-ageing products even before you notice fine lines.

“Morning and night you should be using an eye gel to firm and tone as well as an eye cream on top which will rehydrate and help with dark circles and dryness, ” she says.

“Also apply an eye mask one-to- two times per week which will leave the eye area looking brighter and noticeably more hydrated to help alleviate the fine lines.”

IN-SPA DEFENCE

Diamond peeling dermabrasion, microdermabrasion and hydrodermabrasion are the most effective in-spa facial treatments to help combat fine lines and dehydration, according to Larissa Bavcevich, owner of You Skin and Body.

“These treatments help remove the build-up of dead skin cells which contribute to the appearance of fine lines. Hydrodermabrasion, the newest dermabrasion equipment on the market, not only removes dead skin build-up but hydrates at the same time by saturating the skin in a hydrating solution.”

Adding an eye treatment on to a facial or a massage will also help, according to Ms Hall.

Ms Derecourt recommends products with scientifically proved ingredients such as vitamin A (often seen in skincare products as retinol) and vitamin C.

“Massaging with an anti-ageing serum will finally plump and hydrate the skin, all of which will lessen the appearance of fine lines, ” she says.

“We can achieve excellent ongoing results with these professional treatments and specific home care utilising stable forms of vitamin C, retinol, antioxidants, essential fatty acids and peptides.”
