Statement shades, squoval shapes and short-to-medium lengths are where it’s at for nails this summer, according to Sally Hansen nail expert Alison Bowhill-Hayes.

“The pointy talon (stiletto shape) has disappeared and medium or short ‘squoval’ nails are the hottest looks in Europe and the US. All colours work well with this shape, ” she says. Sylvie Hutchings, chief executive of SCOUT Cosmetics, agrees.

“Nails can be any length and the shape is a square top with rounded edges, ” she says. “It is a traditional look.

However for summer, it’s all about the colour and how you wear your nails. “To mimic the trends on the catwalk, it’s best that nails are kept short for a definitive look paired with practicality.” As for the coolest summer shades, Ms Bowhill-Hayes says the season is all about making a statement — so be bold with your colour choice.

For stand-out looks, she recommends timeless classics including red, black and white, but with a twist.

“While these classic colours might take centre stage I still think you should play and flirt with not only the colour but also the texture, ” she says.

“Don’t be afraid to add a glitter as a final colour — this works particularly nicely over white or black.

“I’m also loving cobalt blue on longer nails and nudes are the go-to trend for an elegant, easy-to-wear manicure.

“Nudes are great for party season, especially when you’re changing outfits but have limited time to repaint.” Irene Falcone, founder of toxin-free beauty website nourishedlife.com.au, stockists of RGB nail lacquer, says to go for rich shades such as orange, teal, navy blue, chocolate brown and mint. “My ultimate pick for this summer is vibrant orange — it is the new coral, ” she says.

“When you’re sporting a bright colour it is best to be on the conservative side with your shape and length. “Round and oval shapes are flattering on all and create a neat, manicured look without looking over the top.” Ms Hutchings says pastels are also hot for summer.

“Pastels are definitely hot at the moment but the twist is to layer the look by combining colours, ” she says.

“Get creative and don’t be scared of candy-coloured nails either. The summer festive season is the time women should get creative — and you are really only limited by your own imagination.”

TIP: “Nude nails are very forgiving and require little maintenance as chips are not as obvious, ” Alison Bowhill-Hayes says. “If you have an olive skin, select peachy tones and pale skin should choose pinky tones.”

WHICH SHADE?

Can’t decide on just one shade for summer? Then don’t. OPI co-founder and brand ambassador Suzi Weiss- Fischmann says OPI’s Trend on Ten is the perfect lacquer pack to see you through summer.

It contains mini-sized shades of OPI’s top-selling shades ranging from soft pink, white and silver to deep red, coral and burgundy ($39.95, from Myer and David Jones).

“This kit is ideal for women who enjoy experimenting with new hues, or who change their lacquer often, ” she says.
