Before you start looking at the little details, decide on the general colour scheme and feel of your day. Think about the basics: the time of year of your wedding, whether it will be formal or informal, whether you are having a religious or civil ceremony, if you would prefer an indoor or outdoor location, your favourite colours and/or flowers, and any treasured family traditions.

You'll soon find that just with those few things, a vision will start to unfold. With that idea in place, colours will be inspired by the season, such as warm, autumnal tones, brights or fresh shades in high summer and rich, elegant berry tones in winter. Your colour palette will help to create a general style which can be reflected in your wedding stationery, decorations, centrepieces, bridal bouquet, the style of wedding dress and the groom's attire - all helping to create a seamless overall aesthetic.

HEARTFELT DECOR

More and more couples are opting for a handmade or vintage style these days, which helps to personalise your special day and is also a creative way to cut costs.

Handwritten place settings are a lovely personal touch and are really easy to do. Or if you're a nifty sewer, maybe think about personalising napkins with people's names, which could double up as a bonbonniere too. Another sweet favour option is to make your own berry jam or fruit chutney, pop them in little jars and decorate with a name tag or twine.

For a garden style or vintage wedding, you can do away with fussy flower arrangements and collect an assortment of glass jars and vintage vases and fill them with relaxed in-season blooms and foliage. Get your mum or maid of honour to head down to the local flower market the day before to stock up and create lovely own garden posies.

Lace or floral bunting creates a pretty, festive atmosphere and can be easily made by sourcing pretty fabric, cutting triangle shapes and sewing a seam around your desired length of twine or rope. If you're not a sewer you could also attach the fabric with cute little pegs. Voila!
