Thinking of popping the question but don’t know where to start? Or angling for a proposal?

Justin Linney, assistant creative director for Linneys jewellers, answers a few common questions.

Which cuts are popular?

"Round, brilliant-cut diamonds are definitely the most popular cut these days, followed by princess-cut diamonds.

"Clients are being more creative with the types of settings and colour combinations of gold used for the wedding and engagement ring set, with less emphasis being placed on achieving a perfect match between the rings.

"I’ve also noticed a trend towards having a combined wedding and engagement ring custom made, instead of wearing the two separate rings together."

What should men be looking for when choosing a ring?

"When guys are ready to propose or buy a special piece of jewellery, they are normally at the stage in the relationship where they know their partner’s style and design preferences, so that helps when selecting the perfect piece.

"Over the past six years we’ve seen a significant change, in that customers are better informed with regard to the type of jewellery they are looking for before they visit our showroom.

"And they are often armed with some images of jewellery on their smart phones and tablets."
