Since the launch of the Bell Tower’s Love Locks for Valentine’s Day in 2012, more than 2000 romantics have locked their love with one of the quirky heart-shaped Bell Tower Love Locks.

This year they’ve had to add more chain to lock more love.

Legend has it that love locks originated in China, with couples fixing a padlock to a fence, a pole or metallic chain to symbolise their eternal love.

The padlock has the lovers’ names or initials inscribed on it and, once sealed, it is the ultimate legacy to their everlasting love.

It is said that as long as the lock remains on the chain, the love will last forever.

This expression of love is now enacted around the world, with locks found in places such as the Great Wall of China, Russia, Guam and Latvia.

The Bell Tower, in Barrack Square, is open every day from 10am.
