Facial hair presents a grooming challenge at the best of times.

Especially when it's for Movember, the annual campaign to raise money and awareness for men's health.

But one bloke has literally turned the concept around.

Gary "Chewy" Austin's unique reverse approach - a moustache fashioned on the back of his head - turned enough heads in the Goldfields to raise more than $10,000 for Movember.

This is a record for Chewy, of Kalgoorlie-Boulder, who's been shaving his head for charity since the campaign began in 2010.

The mo-tivation? Too much facial hair to begin with.

“I've had a beard on my head for about 40 years now and I'm not about to shave it off,” he said.

“It came up as a bit of a joke and it's progressed from there, it gets quite a few laughs and if you get people laughing it creates two things — you're raising awareness and it makes people feel a bit more generous and put their hands in their pocket.”

There's more to moustache grooming than many might think.

The official Movember website has plenty of advice for looking after a mo, whether it's just for November or beyond.

Among the top tips are regular shampooing and conditioning, hot towels to cleanse the skin, adopting a mo style and using the right tools for "serious moustachery".
