1. Red wine

Red-wine stains are easily removed with an oxidising prewash (anything with the word “oxy action” in it).

2. Texta and make-up

A solvent-based approach is required here. Get some white spirit or acetone from the hardware store and use it as a spot cleaner. Acetone is more expensive but will do a better job and will wash out easier but test it for colour fastness on coloured fabric first.

3. Cooking oil

Believe it or not, the best option here is an oven cleaner (any one will do) used as a prewash. Spray it on, let it soak for 10 minutes, then pop it in the wash.

4. Beetroot

Beetroot can be easily removed with any acid. Vinegar (acetic acid) is a good option but any bathroom or kitchen cleaner where the word “acid” appears on the label will work.

However, the effect is not instantaneous — soak it in the acid for a while then put it through the wash.
