Veronicas older and wiser

The Veronicas are all grown up. Nine years after they emerged on to the music scene and seven years since their last album, twin sisters Jessica and Lisa Origliasso have stormed the charts in what has been dubbed the biggest comeback of the year.

Their fresh hit You Ruin Me holds the No.1 spot on both the iTunes and ARIA singles charts — a first in their career — after the women wrangled creative control back from their old label Warner Music and defected to Sony.

Speaking to AAA about bouncing back from their quiet period, Lisa said she liked to think of it as a “rebirth” rather than a comeback.

“We have re-birthed in so many ways — we have grown up as girls and grown up as artists, ” the 29-year-old younger twin explained.

“We have taken control of our lives in a way that meant we had to go through a very challenging period with our old record label to find out what power we actually had.

“We have become fighters, we have become more peaceful and more confident and empowered ourselves to attract the sort of people around us who can support us in the way we need and deserve.”

The Brisbane-raised stars, right, likened the outpouring of support for the single to a “huge hug from all of Australia”, even receiving congratulatory tweets from US rocker Courtney Love, gossip blogger Perez Hilton and comedian Chris Lilley.

It’s not surprising, considering the public has followed the sisters’ journey in the entertainment industry since they were 20.

But with experience comes wisdom and the singers say they have learnt what to share with the wider community and what to protect when it comes to their personal lives.

“It’s a unique experience to grow up as young women in the public eye and the media sets the boundaries you have to work in, ” Jessica said.

“They want to report on our weight so we say ‘Well fine, you want to report on our weight? We will give you our ideologies on the way we see conscious health and eating. If you want to have the conversation, let’s have the conversation — don’t try to dumb it down, because we are too smart for that’.”

The siblings hope to continue their successful streak with the release of their third album, said to be coming out later this month (“That’s the rumour, ” Lisa giggled).

They are also in the middle of discussions to launch a tour Down Under and said Perth would definitely be on the itinerary.

“We want to put the right show together for our fans and make it a personal thing, ” Lisa said.
