Tired eyes can give away much about one’s age and wellbeing — sometimes too much.

“With age there is a loss of structural support that can make lines and loss of elasticity much more evident, ” plastic surgeon Anh Nguyen, of Dr Anh MediSpa and Wellness Centre, says.

Apart from being some of the thinnest and most delicate skin of the body, the eyes work overtime, blinking an average of 15 to 20 times every minute.

“Out of all the muscles in the body, the muscles that control your eyes are the most active, so naturally, the area is the first place to show signs of ageing, ” Suzey Luong, owner of Vanity Box Beauty Ateliers, says.

Hydration is vital, as is avoiding eye products that are too heavy or irritating.

“When the skin of the eye is dehydrated, its fine lines become more visible, ” Tegan Hall, spa manager of Bodhi J, says. “A good analogy is a grape turning into a sultana.”

As with all skin concerns, maintenance begins at home. “Use a specialised eye cream daily to keep the skin hydrated, less puffy and to diminish dark circles, ” Mrs Luong says. A heavier, creamy one for night and a lighter serum for day are ideal.
